Introduction to the "Project 985":

1. The "985 Project" is a key support initiative launched by the Chinese government in 1998 with the aim of building world-class universities. The name derives from the date of May 1998.

2. Objectives: The initiative aims to advance the development of higher education in China by making targeted investments to build a group of world-class universities.

3. Implementation: Approximately 40 universities were selected for priority support. These institutions received substantial government funding to improve teaching facilities, enhance research capabilities, and attract and cultivate outstanding talent.

Introduction to the "211 Project":

1. The "211 Project" is a plan launched by the Chinese government in the early 1990s with the aim of cultivating high-caliber talent for the 21st century.

2. Objectives: To concentrate resources and provide focused support for the development of approximately 100 universities and a number of key disciplines, bringing them up to world-class standards.

3. Implementation: These institutions received substantial government investment for infrastructure development, research projects, and faculty development.

Introduction to the "Double First-Class" Initiative:

1. The "Double First-Class" initiative (the construction of world-class universities and first-class disciplines) is another major higher education development strategy launched by the Chinese government in 2015, following the "985" and "211" projects.

2. Objectives: To propel a group of universities and disciplines into the ranks of the world’s best or among the global leaders.

3. Implementation: This initiative is no longer limited to the list of institutions included in the previous "985" and "211" projects; instead, it is open to all universities nationwide. Through a competitive selection process, it supports the comprehensive development of certain universities and the development of specific disciplines.
