人之初,性本善。

人刚出生的时候,本性是善良的。

孟子认为,人生来就具有向善的潜能,内心天生就包含着仁、义、礼、智等美德。就像刚出生的婴儿,没有受到外界不良环境的影响,他们的本性是纯净、善良的,不会天生就作恶。这种善良的本性是人与生俱来的,是人性中最根本、最纯粹的部分。

性相近,习相远。

人的本性原本是相近的,但后来因为受到不同的环境影响和习惯的熏染,彼此之间的差距就越来越大了。

这句话强调了后天环境、教育等因素对人性的重要影响。在刚出生时,每个人的本性都是善良且相近的,就像一张白纸。但随着成长,人们生活在不同的家庭、社会环境中,接受不同的教育,养成不同的习惯。有的人在良好的环境中受到正面的引导,继续保持和发扬了善良的本性;而有的人则可能受到不良环境的影响,沾染上恶习,逐渐偏离了善良的本性。这样一来,人与人之间的差距就越来越大,有的人变得善良、正直,有的人则变得邪恶、自私。
