Confucius said to Ji: "Eight rows of dancers dancing in the court, which can be tolerated, and which can't be tolerated?"

The three families were cut through with the Yong, and Zi said, "'Xiang Wei Pai Gong, the Son of Heaven Mu Mu,' why take it from the Hall of the Three Families?"

The Son said, "If a man is not kind, what is the case with rites? If a man is not kind, how is he like music?"

Lin Fang asked about the origin of rites, and Zi said, "Great question! Ritual, with its extravagance, would rather be frugal; mourning, with its ease, would rather be chi."

The son said, "It is better for the barbarians to have a ruler than for the Xia to die."

Ji traveled to Mount Tai. The son said to Ran You, "Can the woman not be saved?" He said, "No." The son said: "Whoops! Had said that Taishan is not as Lin put it?"

The son said, "A gentleman who has nothing to contend for must also shoot! Greeting and rising, down and drinking. Its competition is also a gentleman."

子夏问曰：“‘巧笑倩兮，美目盼兮，素以为绚兮’何谓也？”子曰：“绘事后素。”曰：“礼后乎？”子曰：“起予者商也，始可与言《诗》已矣。”

The son said: "summer rituals I can say, qi insufficient levy also; Yin rituals I can say, Song insufficient levy also. Literature is not enough so also, enough then I can levy it."

The Son said, "Ancestors who have gone since both irrigation, I do not wish to observe."

Or he asked about the an ancestral sacrifice. He said, "I don't know. The one who knows what he says is also in the world, and it is as if he were to show it to you!" Point to the palm of his hand.

Sacrifice as in, sacrifice to God as God is. The Son said, "I am not with the sacrifice as if it were not."

Wang Sun Jia asked, "'Instead of pandering to Ao, I would rather pander to Zao', what is the meaning of this?" Zi said, "Otherwise, you will be offended by heaven and have nothing to pray for."

Zi said, "Zhou supervised the second generation, and Yuyu Wenya! I am from Zhou."

The son entered the temple and asked about every matter. Or he said, "Who says that the son of a Zou person knows the rites? When he entered the temple, he asked about everything." When he heard this, he said, "It is a gift."

Zi said, "Shooting is not the main skin, for the force of different sections, the ancient way."

When Zigong wanted to go to the rationed sheep at the end of the tutelage, Zi said, "Give it too! You love its sheep, I love its rites."

The son said, "If you do your duty to the king and do your best, people will think you are flattered."

Duke Ding asked, "What is it like for a ruler to make his ministers and for his ministers to serve his ruler?" Confucius replied, "A ruler makes his ministers polite, and a minister serves his ruler with loyalty."

Zi said, "Guan Ju, joy without lust, sorrow without sorrow."

哀公问社于宰我，宰我对曰：“夏后氏以松，殷人以柏，周人以栗，曰使民战栗。”子闻之，曰：“成事不说，遂事不谏，既往不咎。”

子曰：“管仲之器小哉！”或曰：“管仲俭乎？”曰：“管氏有三归，官事不摄，焉得俭？”“然则管仲知礼乎？”曰：“邦君树塞门，管氏亦树塞门；邦君为两君之好，有反坫。管氏亦有反坫，管氏而知礼，孰不知礼？”

Zi language Lu master music, said: "music it can be known. Beginning to make, open and close as also; from the, pure as also, sparkling as also, deduction as also, to become."

仪封人请见，曰：“君子之至于斯也，吾未尝不得见也。”从者见之。出曰：“二三子何患于丧乎？天下之无道也久矣，天将以夫子为木铎。”

Zi said of the Shao: "As beautiful as it is, it is not yet as good as it could be." He said of Wu, "It is as beautiful as it can be, but it is not as good as it can be."

The Son said, "If you are not lenient in your residence, if you do not honor your rites, and if you do not mourn when you are in mourning, how can I observe this?"

孔子谈到fourth generation (e.g. Chinese Americans)时说：“他在家庙的庭院里用row of dancers at sacrifices奏乐舞蹈，这样的事都忍心去做，还有什么事情不忍心去做呢？”

鲁国大夫孟孙、叔孙、季孙三家在祭祀祖先时，也像天子一样朗诵《雍》这篇诗。孔子说：“‘助祭的是诸侯，天子严肃静穆地在那里主祭’，这句话怎么能用在他们的家庙中呢？”

Confucius said, "If a man has no benevolence and virtue, how does he treat the ceremonial system? If a man has not benevolence and virtue, how does he treat music?"

林放问什么是礼的根本。孔子说：“你问的问题很重要啊！就礼而言，与其奢侈，不如节俭；就丧事而言，与其仪式上治办得周备，不如内心真正哀伤。”

Confucius said, "Though the culturally backward barbaric regions have monarchs, they are not as good as when the central countries had no monarchs."

fourth generation (e.g. Chinese Americans)要去祭祀泰山。孔子对冉有说：“你难道不能劝阻他吗？”冉有回答说：“不能。”孔子说：“唉！难道泰山神还不如林放懂得礼吗？”

孔子说：“君子没有什么可与别人争的事情。如果有的话，那一定是射箭比赛了。即使是射箭比赛，也还是要先行揖让之礼，然后登堂比赛，比赛完后，再相互作揖行礼，下堂喝酒。这样的争，才是君子之争。”

子夏问道：“‘美丽的笑容多么动人啊，美丽的眼睛多么顾盼生辉啊，在洁白的底子上描绘出绚丽的色彩啊’，这是什么意思呢？”孔子说：“先有洁白的底子，然后才能绘画。”子夏又问：“那么，礼仪是在仁德之后产生的吗？”孔子说：“能启发我的人，就是商啊！现在可以开始同你讨论《诗经》了。”

孔子说：“夏朝的礼，我可以讲述；但夏的后代杞国不足以作为证明。殷朝的礼，我可以讲述；但殷的后代宋国也不足以作为证明。这是因为历史文献不足的缘故。如果有足够的文献，我就可以证明它们了。”

Confucius said, "With regard to the rite of ancestral sacrifice, after the first offering of wine, I do not want to see it."

有人问关于禘祭的道理。孔子说：“我不知道。但懂得禘祭道理的人，治理天下就像把东西放在手掌上给人看那样容易。”孔子说着，指着自己的手掌。

祭祀祖先就好像祖先真的在面前，祭神就好像神真的在面前。孔子说：“我如果不亲自参加祭祀，那就和没有祭祀一样。”

王孙贾问道：“俗话说：‘与其巴结天帝，不如巴结灶神。’这话是什么意思？”孔子说：“不是这样的。如果得罪了上天，那就没有地方可以祷告了。”

Confucius said, "How colorful is the ceremonial system of the Zhou dynasty, which was established on the basis of the Xia and Shang dynasties! I advocate the Zhou dynasty."

孔子走进太庙，每件事都要问。有人说：“谁说鄹人之子懂得礼呢？他走进太庙，每件事都要问。”孔子听到后，说：“这就是礼呀。”

Confucius said, "Archery competitions do not aim to penetrate the target; this is because everyone has different strength. This is an ancient rule."

Zigong wanted to get rid of the live goat used on the first day of each month when he sued his ancestors' temple. Confucius said, "Give it! You cherish that sheep, but I cherish that rite."

Confucius said, "Serve the monarch and do exactly according to the rites, but others think you are flattering."

鲁定公问：“君主使用臣子，臣子侍奉君主，应该怎样做呢？”孔子回答说：“君主应该按照礼的要求使用臣子，臣子应该按照忠的要求侍奉君主。”

Confucius said, "The poem Guan Ju is happy but not debauched, sad but not mournful."

鲁哀公向宰我问土地神的神主应该用什么木料。宰我回答说：“夏朝用松木，商朝用柏木，周朝用栗木，意思是让百姓战栗。”孔子听到后说：“已经做过的事不用提了，已经完成的事不用劝阻了，过去的事也不必再追究了。”

孔子说：“管仲的器量太小了。”有人问：“管仲节俭吗？”孔子说：“管仲有三处豪华的住宅，家里的仆从不兼职做其他事，怎么能说节俭呢？”那人又问：“那么管仲懂得礼吗？”孔子说：“国君家门前立照壁，管仲也立照壁；国君与别国国君结盟有放置酒杯的土台，管仲也有这样的土台。如果管仲也算懂礼，那还有谁不懂礼呢？”

孔子给鲁国太师谈音乐，说：“奏乐的道理是可以知道的。开始时，合奏齐鸣，气势盛壮；继续下去，和谐纯一，清晰分明，连绵不断，这样音乐就完成了。”

仪地方的官员请求见孔子，说：“凡是君子到这里来，我从没有不见他们的。”孔子的随从学生引他去见了孔子。他出来后说：“你们几位何必担心失去职位呢？天下无道已经很久了，上天会以孔子为号令天下的人。”

Commenting on the music of Shao, Confucius said, "Beautiful and good." Commenting on the music of Wu, he said, "Beautiful, but not good enough."

Confucius said, "How can I look on a man in a high position who does not treat others with generosity, who does not perform rites with seriousness and respect, and who does not mourn when he attends funerals?"
