Introduction to the Dinglan Ruler:

1. The Dinglan Ruler, also known as the “Divine Ruler,” is said to have originated from the story of Ding Lan, a filial son from the Han Dynasty. Ding Lan lost his mother at a young age; when he grew up, he carved a wooden statue of his mother by hand to express his longing for her, which is how the Dinglan Ruler got its name.

2. The Dinglan Ruler was primarily used for measuring ritual items such as shrines, carved wooden statues, and ancestral tablets. Later, its use gradually expanded to include the measurement of dimensions for ancestral burial sites (such as tombs and ancestral halls).

3. The Dinglan Ruler is typically 1 chi 2 cun 8 fen in length, equivalent to approximately 38.78 centimeters. It is divided into ten sections, each representing different auspicious or inauspicious meanings, and further subdivided into four smaller segments.

4. When using the Dinglan ruler, people generally avoid inauspicious divisions such as “Harm, Suffering, Death, and Loss,” and instead select auspicious divisions like “Ding, Prosperity, Righteousness, Official Rank, Rise, and Wealth,” in the hope of attracting good fortune and warding off misfortune.
