Introduction to Blood Pressure:

1. Blood pressure in the human body is typically composed of the pressure when the heart contracts (systolic pressure) and the pressure when the heart relaxes (diastolic pressure).

(1) Systolic Blood Pressure (the pressure when the heart contracts): The normal range is typically between 90 and 120 millimeters of mercury (mmHg).

(2) Diastolic pressure (the pressure when the heart relaxes): The normal range is typically between 60 and 80 millimeters of mercury (mmHg).

2. Different combinations of systolic and diastolic pressures result in different classifications of blood pressure.

(1) Hypotension: Systolic pressure less than 90 mmHg and diastolic pressure less than 60 mmHg.

(2) Normal blood pressure: Systolic pressure less than 120 mmHg and diastolic pressure less than 80 mmHg.

(3) Elevated blood pressure (prehypertension): Systolic pressure between 120 and 129 mmHg and diastolic pressure less than 80 mmHg.

(4) Stage 1 Hypertension: Systolic blood pressure between 130–139 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure between 80–89 mmHg.

(5) Stage 2 hypertension: Systolic blood pressure of at least 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure of at least 90 mmHg.

(6) Hypertensive crisis: Systolic blood pressure exceeding 180 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure exceeding 120 mmHg, requiring immediate medical intervention.

3. Blood pressure readings may vary due to a variety of factors, including age, gender, weight, health status, emotional state, medication use, and the time of measurement.

4. A single measurement may not be accurate; it is recommended to take several readings.
